Hi Stuart

The Powerboat Trainer Course is run by HQ. Clubs do not tun them. You will need to contact your RDO (Regional Development Officer) as they have to recommend you for the course. HQ only run 1 or 2 courses per year. To be honest i am not sure when the next one will be but can find out for you. If you are based in the West Midlands you need to contact Gareth Brookes (RDO) his details are on the RDO page or on the Coaching Team Page. Its a pretty intensive course and i would recommend you spend a good deal of time prepping for it. Are you a PBI (coastal)?  The course is usually run either at Calshott or Plas Menai.

Thanks,

Actually I'm not based in the West Midland but find your site a much better resource for PBI's than tha RYA's.  Im A Pro Boat driver and do most of my work on the North Sea (2012 hours so far this year). But am involved with a training schol in Abersoch so the Plas Manai location is attractive to me.

Ive been a PBI for 5 years and an APBI for two.

What sort of prepping do you recommend or is there a sylabus I can buy/download?

thanks again Stuart

Ok, so your driving skills should be on par. If you have done the ADV PBI course and have actually been putting it to good use then you should have logged some good teaching hours. The Trainer course will test your knowledge of powerboating through navigation, chartwork, driving skills, meteorology, charts, buoyage, course planning and presentation skills. The course will then give you guidance on how to teach L2 drivers to become PBI's and then test you on it. Its all about coaching, listening and giving accurate feedback in a positive and constructive manner. You need to ensure that you know the L2 syllabus off by heart. I would also recommend that you read the Instructor handbook and the Coaching handbook. It may also be worth reading up on Wavelength re latest issues and preferred methods ie Man Overboard in high sided craft. The Powerboat Handbook by Paul Glatzel is worthy of a read but i'm sure you will know most of whats in there. Do you know your RDO?

Thanks again.

I think I can hndle a boat OK but the Sea has a good way f humbling me every now and again.

I don't know who my RDO is but will find out!  I'm up to snuff with most of the stuff you've listed but Metereology is an area I can always improve on.  I'l get on the bridge of the Mothership and start swatting the cloud names.  Paul G's book is a good one and I'll get hold of the other publicatons,

I'm hearing wht you say about the coaching, I've never taken my ego into the classrom or on a boat when tachin and I've always sen my role as an enablng role rather than information download.

I'll look up the article in Wavelength We have our own way of doing it out here it will be interesting to see if there is any similarity.

Thanks again, if your ever in the Southampton area and fancy a drive of an Avon SR84/450cat/ Jet Drive send me an email! She'll only do 40 knots but it keeps it's speed through some big swells

cheers  Stuart
